Second, you need to decide how much weight you want to lose -- but be sensible, no one wants to see your skeleton while you're still wearing it. As a good start, aim to lose a pound or two a week, but not more than that or you'll just be losing water and muscle instead of fat. Human fat contains about 3500 kcal per pound, so to lose a pound a week you should use up 500 kcal more a day than you eat.

Third, yes and no. Your body shape / genes / lifestyle / metabolism will all have some effect on how easily you tend to gain or lose weight. But the most important of these is lifestyle. For example, an Olympic athlete will burn calories faster than someone who sits in a chair all day. And a person who eats a balanced diet will not put on weight as quickly as someone who gets every meal from a fast-food outlet.

Fourth, the usual recommendations for daily calorie intake are 2000 kcal for women and 2500 kcal for men. If you are particularly short / tall / fine-boned / muscular / active / sedentary your calorie needs could easily be very different. You can calculate the exact number of calories you require by multiplying your resting metabolic rate with your activity factor. For example, a 6 ft-tall bricklayer might need 3700 kcal while a 5 ft-tall housebound person may only use 1400 kcal.

To summarise how many calories to lose weight are required, it comes back to the old -- but true -- saying 'eat less, do more'. In this case less really is more: less calorie intake, more weight loss -- although that doesn't mean you have to starve yourself. Just watch portion sizes and be a bit more active!

The metabolic advantage in low-carbohydrate diets - greater weight loss than isocaloric diets of different composition.

It is widely held that a calorie is a calorie and by this it is usually meant that two isocaloric diets lead to the same weight loss. A calorie is a measure of heat energy and when food is being referenced, it represents the total amount of energy stored in food. Used in this way, all calories are equal, whether from fat, protein, or carbohy-drates. However, the idea that a dietary calorie is a calorie as far as how it influences useable and storable energy, body weight, and composition under all conditions is simplistic at best.

Many factors influence how much energy is actually derived from dietary macro¬nutrient intake. Calories can be "wasted" in many ways. Decreased absorption from the GI tract and increased excretion are two obvious ways. An increase in thermo¬genesis and energy expenditure will also waste calories. In the case of thermogenesis (thermic effect of feeding), or the heat generated in processing food, the thermic effect of nutrients is approximately 2-3% for lipids, 6-8% for carbohydrates, and 25-30% for proteins. This in itself is almost enough to explain the metabolic advantage of low-carb, high-protein diets. But there's more involved. For example it has been shown that increasing dietary protein increases fat oxidation. As well, the calorie cost in the use of the various macronutrients for energy also differs, with protein being the least efficient.

Through the interaction of both cytoplasmic and mitochondrial pathways it is possible to store both carbohydrates and protein as body fat. In the case of protein, it involves both the glucogenic and ketogenic amino acids. The ketogenic influence on body fat is obvious, since ketones are readily metabolized to two carbon units and can be directly used for lipogenesis. The glucogenic amino acids can enter the TCA cycle as intermediates and either through a short or long pathway end up as 2 carbon units that can be exported to the cytoplasm for lipogenesis.

Low-carbohydrate and higher-protein diets do more than increase weight loss. It's also been shown that low-carbohydrate, high-protein diets favorably affect body mass and composition and that these changes are independent of energy intake.

But this is nothing new. Prior research also found that a low-carbohydrate diet results in a significant fat loss and an increased retention of muscle mass, either alone or in comparison with a high-carbohydrate diet.

For example, in 1971 a group of researchers looked at the effects of three diets that had the same calorie and protein levels, but varying fat and carbohydrate content.They found that, as the carbohydrates in the diets went down, there was an increased weight and fat loss. In other words, the men who were on the lower-carbohydrate diets lost the most weight and body fat.

In 1998, another study, this time involving obese teenagers, came up with similar results. After 8 weeks on a low-carbohydrate diet, the teens not only lost significant amounts of weight and body fat, but even managed to increase their lean body mass.

In the study, a 6-week carbohydrate-restricted diet resulted in a favorable response in body composition (decreased fat mass and increased lean body mass) in normal-weight men. The results of this study indicate that a low-carbohydrate diet mobilizes and burns up body fat more than a high-carbohydrate diet, while at the same time preserving muscle mass.

Insulin, by varying the amount of fat and carbohydrate storage, can also make the body more efficient in the use of dietary calories. For example, decreased insulin levels, increased insulin sensitivity and even lack of an insulin receptor in fat tissue leads to increases in energy expenditure and helps to protect against obesity even in obesiogenic environments.

Calories from different macronutrient mixes can affect appetite, satiety, compliance, short- and long-term compensatory responses, and changes in the oxidation of other substrates and thus make a difference as far as weight loss and body composition are concerned. For example, one study found that fat mass status and the macronutrient composition of an acute dietary intake influence substrate oxida¬tion rates. This study found that the intake of a high-protein, lower-carbohydrate single meal improved postprandial lipid oxidation in obese women and produced an increased thermic response. These responses were due to elevated insulin levels that occurs with higher-carbohydrate meals as well as the increased energy needs associated with the higher-protein meal.

The enhanced weight loss on protein-enriched diets as compared with balanced diets has been often assigned to a greater food-derived thermogenesis, an effect generally attributed to the metabolic costs of peptide-bond synthesis and breakdown, urogenesis, and gluconeogenesis.

Is Fast Food Good or Bad?

Is fast food good or bad? Would it be fair to answer this question with the answer both? Well after some thought and consideration I have decided to go with than answer. Why? Well while the traditional definition of fast food includes greasy burgers, oil dripping French fries, saturated and trans fat central not to mention sugar filled sodas. However, there are some fast food restaurants today that are trying their best to change the game and offer some nutritious meals while maintaining fast food prices and quick service.



The Good

Restaurants like subway, Arby's, and Chicken Kitchen are offing an alternative to traditional fast food. Their menus consist of somewhat healthy meals and they provide the same quick service as the burger and fries fast food. For instance the 6" chicken teriyaki at Subway has less than 6g of fat and contains only 370 calories in total, and this is one of the more fattening items on the "fit" menu. It also tastes really good! Subway was relatively expensive less than a year ago but these days you can get a foot long for 5 bucks! This is also becoming true for many of the other "healthy fast food restaurants." With our hectic lifestyles these types of restaurants can be life savers for someone who has no other choice but to grab lunch every day.

The bad

If your definition of fast food IS burgers and fries then yeah it's bad for you. Basically put the bad nutrition outweighs the good nutrition by a whole lot in these meals. One burger and fries meal can be over 1000 calories at some restaurants which is half of what our intake should be for the entire day! Anything deep friend should be avoided as much as possible. Even some of the healthy fast food is not so great. For instance at Chicken Kitchen most of the menu includes white rice which is not that good to be eating very often. And the mayo in the subway tuna can kill the whole meal. So choose carefully what you eat even with the healthy fast food places.

The ugly

When it all comes down to it fast food is fast food. It will never substitute for good ol fashioned home cooking where you know exactly what's going into your body. It can also become really expensive when trying to eat healthy but still having to eat out since it is a little more expensive to get quality food on the road.

What we usually miss by overlooking the Nutrition Panel are extremely high calorie, saturated fat, and sodium numbers. All of these numbers have a tremendous effect on our health. It is a well known fact that a diet high in saturated fat and high in sodium can lead to numerous health problems. So how can we avoid the dangers of these foods? Well, the answer is simple, by looking at the Nutrition Facts panel.

Remember that everything you purchase has to have the Nutrition Facts so you never have to guess as to what you are buying. Most people who take the time to look over the nutrition panel simply look over the calories and the grams of saturated fat. While that is important, you also want to make sure that you look at the amount of sodium in the product. Sodium is often overlooked even though it's an important factor in determining the product's nutritious values. Too much salt in your diet is very unhealthy; therefore, you should always look at the sodium levels especially if you are eating something canned or frozen. Public knowledge of the serious dangers found in potato chips may finally be surfacing. The California-based Environmental Law Foundation (ELF) has filed notices with the state's attorney general against potato chip manufacturers:

... that would require them to place labels on their products warning consumers about the high levels of acrylamide found inside. Acrylamide is formed when starchy foods are baked or fried at high temperatures and is considered a cancer-causing chemical by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.

Manufacturers who sell their products without such warnings are in violation of California law, California Proposition 65.

The attorney general's office has 60 days to decide to pursue the case; if the state declines, the ELF will file lawsuits against the companies.

The reaction from the chip makers was on the defensive ... though the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) wavering position on the dangers of acrylamide certainly doesn't help.

This is only one of the many side effects that occur when food is highly processed; for instance, using high temperatures to cook foods can contribute to the formation of carcinogenic substances. Another similar example occurs when meats are cooked at high temperatures. In this case, heterocyclic amines can be formed.

Ideally, you should consume foods that are minimally processed to avoid these types of toxic byproducts. I assure you that there are many others, most of which have yet to be discovered. Acrylamides have only been known for a few years and many experts discounted them when they were first discovered.

In the best case, over half of your foods should be uncooked and eaten in the raw state. My diet is typically about 80 percent to 90 percent raw foods, and I find it is one of the major ways that I am able to remain healthy and avoid all sorts of health problems and challenges.

It may take you awhile to have more than 50 percent of your diet raw but start by throwing out the obvious and well-known processed foods that there is absolutely no excuse to consume:

  • Doughnuts
  • French fries and potato chips
  • All Sodas

Most of us sit in a single position for the whole day in the office, and in the morning / evening drive all the way to our places. As a result at night, while going to bed, many of us experience a slight pain in the back.

Golden-needle-mushroom (Jin-Gen-Goo) sucessfully kills 95% of cancer cells

Research done by Singapore U shows that eating this mushroom can destroy

Professor Phan Hwai Chong of Yang Ming Research Centre in Taiwan told

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body.These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar, is a cancer-feeder.

By cutting off sugar it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like Nutrasweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt. ( THE WEST MADE US 2 CHANGE FROM SEA 2 WHITE IODISED SALT )

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus .

By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soya milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment.

A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful,especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine.

Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water- best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic! . Recently, Dr. Edward Fujimoto,
Wellness Program Manager at CastleHospitalwas on a TV program to explain this health hazard.

He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food in the microwave using plastic containers. This especially applies to foods that contain fat.

He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body.

Instead, he recommends using glass, such as CorningWare, Pyrex or ceramic containers for heating food.

You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is
in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, CorningWare, etc. He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away from the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons.

Also, he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran, is just as dangerous when placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.
